The
residents at Heritage of Edina can experience hundreds of activities
each month. It's a rich mixture of events that brings something
of interest to everyone and is near and dear to the heart of Kristy
Bredeson, Director of Activities.
Kristy completed her degree in Occupational therapy later in life.
She tried other careers, but having spent a lot of time with aunts
and uncles during their aging processes, she was always drawn back
to working with the elderly and wanted to do it in a meaningful
way. Before joining Heritage, she worked for the Willmar State Hospital
and in Adult daycare. After 7 years at Heritage she discusses how
much she enjoys her work and the day-to-day diversity of building
relationships with the residents, finding events that suit their
needs, encouraging a reluctant resident to attend an event and watching
the sparkle in his eyes as he enjoys it.
The best part of her position at Heritage comes in the form of
appreciation from the families and residents. Her staff receives
letters from families on a regular basis telling them how much their
efforts are appreciated. One family expressed that the work of the
activities staff is the primary reason for her mother's residence
at Heritage.
And Kristy goes out of her way to make certain everyone is involved.
Her staff makes reminder phone calls prior to events, and if needed,
can provide escorts to the events to insure some residents make
it safely. That's a lot of hats to wear but Kristy wouldn't have
it any other way. She spends time developing people and designing
programs with a great staff who works as a well-orchestrated team,
and she gets to work with the residents directly as well. "It
has the variety and hands-on work I love," she states.
At home Kristy enjoys a very active 15-year old daughter. She
also takes time for reading, gardening, and remodeling projects.
